Family Missionary Services Project Report 2011

Feeding Schemes

Soup kitchen Randburg
We have organized 16 food distributions since August 2011, our portable soup kitchen reaches many underprivileged families in the surrounding areas of Randburg and often bases out of a kitchen in Scout Hall Windsor.  Our meals include delicious meat and vegetable stew, bread, rice and pap. Along with the meal our volunteers offer counselling and a much needed word of encouragement.

Thembisa Project
In Thembisa Township we have set up a supervised kitchen through a kind and humble local pastor who cares for street children and disadvantaged mothers. The need in this township is very great and we would like to open our doors to many more needy children. We also organized a fun end of the year Christmas party for the children in the Thembisa Creche, the party included Christmas gifts, goody packets, games, face painting, balloons and clowns.
In 2011 we donated more than 240 crates of food, 24 boxes of linen, 26 boxes of clothes, 9 boxes of toys, 2 boxes of cleaning supplies and toiletries, 50 Kgs of Mealie meal, and 92 boxes of bread to this project.

HIV Aids Education

Seotloana Primary School
In April 2011 we organized a HIV Aids Education program at Seotloana Primary School. Our team helped develop an educational HIV/Aids show which is geared at educating primary students via Dramas, music and a multimedia presentation. This show focuses on the dangers and prevention of HIV infection and has been extremely successful at reaching our target of educating and breaking down the stigma attached to the HIV/Aids pandemic. The program an hour long is centred on dramas, puppets, music and a multimedia presentation. We also hosted work shop for the school in the form of an essay competition and a prize giving ceremony conducted by our volunteers and judged by the school’s teachers. Prizes for this event where donated by a local Jet store.

Creche Early learning and feeding program

Siphiwe creche
In Gauteng we have adopted one of the children’s schools in the Diepsloot Township where we have been teaching the children the Bible and basic vocabulary and reading and writing skills. We have involved companies and individuals to help this school with materials, such as educational Christian DVDs, general school supplies, clothing and food. In 2011 we hosted 10 early learning classes and 5 cooked lunches for the children at Siphiwe creche, donated 10 crates of food, and 50 blankets. We also organized a fun end of the year Christmas party with Christmas gifts, goody packets, games, face painting, and clowns.

Bible Training

Living a Healthy Life Seminar
During Easter 2011 we were able to assist with a program in Thembisa focusing on the topic of living a healthy life both physically and spiritually. It was a very upbeat and enjoyable program with guest speakers, lots of singing, and a free meal for everyone attending. Alisa Bleich was one of the guest speakers and she spoke on the importance of caring for your body and practical ways to have a healthy lifestyle in our society today.

Northcliff Mission center Bible Studies
We hosted and conducted a weekly Bible study at our residential mission center, with the vision of helping our students to find ways to practically apply the Bible to their daily lives and encouraging them to find ways to become more active Christians. We have also involved our students in our local projects at the Diepsloot Creche and soup kitchen in Randburg.

Mission Trips

Malawi Mission trip
In June 2011 we visited and preached in 11 churches praying for the sick and giving encouragement as we went, all the churches we visited were rural except for one in Lilongwe and one in Kasungu. “Excerpt of trip log by Isaac Bleich;....God did an amazing miracle to provide us with a 7 seater vehicle to use for the duration of our visit free of charge Mr. Edwin Banda generously offered the use of his vehicle and even to collect me from the airport!, this was in fact a direct answer to prayer as I had been praying for a vehicle to use allowing us to fly into Malawi thus saving time and money for shorter trips. We took Bibles and Gospels along for distribution, and as always the demand was greater than the supply.”

Zimbabwe Mission trip
In February 2011 we took 30 sponsored STEPS programs (Christian Character and Faith Building Curriculum for children) to Primary Schools in Zimbabwe. All the public schools are very poor and are lacking access to quality teaching materials. The country has been through a period of great upheaval over the past 10 years, and at times the educational system as a whole was virtually shut down due to lack of funds and other reasons. The teachers were very inspired when they received the curriculums and said that this was just what they needed. We encouraged those who had access to e-mail, (3 of them) to send us little reports about the use of the books and the reactions of the children as they use them over the next few months.
The Sunday school teachers we met were excited about the STEPS sets and said that the material will be well used in all their programs. A few mentioned that the stories are also very good for the adults.
The children in Harare speak English quite well and in the rural areas the stories will be read in English and then translated into the local language.

Hospital Ministry

Steve Biko Academic Hospital
In December 2011 on Christmas day we visited Steve Biko Hospital bring with us gifts and balloons for all the children admitted over Christmas.  The nurses and staff on duty were so supportive and helped our Christmas clowns pass out gifts and sing Christmas carols.  It was also a wonderful opportunity for us to offer a word of encouragement and prayer to the parents in the wards.

Johannesburg General Hospital
Family Missionary Services had done 10 hospital visits since June 2011 at Johannesburg General Hospital, in coordination with Philani Care Foundation. We have donated 20 boxes of food, 2 boxes of clothing, and 2 boxes of toys. We offer spiritual counseling, support, and prayer to the under privileged patients and children admitted in the wards. The primary focus of Philani Care Foundation is to help HIV+ patients. The donated goods are also used to help underprivileged hospital patients who come from other parts of the country and do not have the support of families and friends locally.
